What To Write On A Valentine’s Card

Now there’s a good question and one that you’ve no doubt found yourself asking, what with Valentine’s Day being right around the corner.

In fact, it’s bothered you so much you went to Google and ended up here on our blog.

It was bad enough having to fight your way into the local bookshop, then elbow your way to the front and choose the one card that you thought was the perfect fit.

The problem is that you’re now staring at a blank canvas.

The last time you felt this bad was probably the first day of your Leaving Cert and the Irish paper sat there glaring at you. Just daring you to write a cúpla focal but all you had memorized was what you did last summer.

And apparently, that was picking blackberries with your friends under clear blue skies.

But that doesn’t solve your romantic dilemma – you need something to write on the card that will either impress your loved one or just not land you in trouble.

So let’s look at what to write on a Valentines card in a bit more detail.

Don’t Jump At The First Idea

The Internet is full of suggestions for what you could jot down on that awfully blank card in front of you. These vary from the somewhat cheesy”, “You and me were meant to be” to the funnier, “I love you to the Moon and back”.

You also have the ones that could potentially land you in relationship jail, “I love you just the way you are”.

Tell me you don’t like something about me, without telling me you don’t like something about me.

The real trick in making an impact with your Valentine’s message is to write from your heart. You don’t need to be a literary genius to do this.

Don’t overthink it. It doesn’t need to be all flowers, roses, and promises of eternal and undying love.

Valentines Card Message Ideas

Some ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

Do you have an in-joke that you share all the time?
Do you have pet names for each other?
If it’s a new relationship, talk about your hopes for your future together
If it’s an existing relationship, look back on how far you’ve come together
Talk about the friendship you’ve developed as part of your relationship
Mention major milestones in your life together

How To Truly Say “I Love You”

Here’s a pro tip.

Spend a few minutes writing down different versions of your Valentine’s message on a notepad. Don’t worry if you don’t know what to write, just write the first thing that comes to mind. After that, you’ll find other ideas popping up too. Once you’ve come up with the perfect message, write it down, and then put it away for 24 hours before you read it again. And if it still puts a smile on your face the following day then you can be pretty sure you’ve come up with something good.

But if you do need a genuine bailout, and you’re currently in panic mode, here’s one suggestion from the team at The Devlin:
